Other Music Recording Co. continue their tradition of pressing wildy inventive and unique music with today’s release of Xlourious White’s debut album, Goats. A collaborative effort by Australian drummer Jim White (of The Dirty Three) and Cretan musician George Xylouris, Goats is a new kind of experimental album, one that draws as much from contemporary punk, jazz and noise music as it does from traditional Eastern European & Greek arrangements. Within the span of the album’s nine tracks, Goats boasts a wide range of emotions, from contemplative and brooding to celebratory and savage.
Ben Ratcliff of The New York Times recently profiled the group, remarking:
Their music starts with old Cretan forms — the brisk, dance-beat sousta and the slow, sung, expressive rizitika — and spreads outward into loose, sympathetic improvisations of uncertain length, the kind of thing that has been at the center of each man’s music for a long time.
You can stream the first single from Goats in it’s entirety below. The duo will be playing live every Thursday night this month at Union Pool in Brooklyn, NY, before heading off on their recently expanded U.S. tour.
